Any exercise including aerobics can be done at any age. Let us understand what aerobics is. The word aerobic means “with oxygen”. When we increase our activity level, the muscles require more fuel. And this fuel comes from oxygen in the bloodstream. The brain signals our body to breathe faster so that more fuel can be generated. The oxygenated blood is pumped to all parts of the body by the heart, which is why it beats faster when we exercise. Like any other muscle, the stronger the heart the more efficient it is. A better circulation system means better exchange of cell waste for oxygen and therefore better fitness. The fitter our body, more is the work that can be done by each unit of oxygen. Middle age exercise, therefore, must include aerobics for excellent health through to old age.
